Emotional intelligence

A phrase coined by Daniel Goleman in the 1990's to describe a form of intelligence that allows us to notice, understand and manage our own emotions as well as read and respond appropriately to those around us to build effective relationships.

EQ

A short-hand way of saying Emotional Intelligence that makes that comparison with IQ, highlighting that this is a form of intelligence.

Explanatory style

A psychological trait that influences how we explain the events in our lives. We can have an optimistic or pessimestic explanatory style.

Extrinsic motivation

Where someone is motivated to complete a task by some promised reward (or avoidance of a negative outcome) that is external to themselves.  For example, someone who is motivated to complete a task in return for payment.
