Mirror neurons

A concept first suggested in the 1990's, some neuroscientists believe that mirror neurons are a type of brain cell in the brain that activates when we do something (like get angry), but also activate when we see other peoples actions. Imagine you see someone stub their toe and you immediately flinch.

It's suggested that these mirror neuron cells instantly simulate not just people's actions, but also the thinking and emotions linked to the actions we observe.
